Getting to The Root of Hair Removal

Author: Diana Chin
Laser hair removal is a procedure that is growing in popularity among men and women who are tired of shaving, plucking and waxing away their unwanted facial and body hair. The process is fast and easy. A technician at an aesthetic clinic directs a laser at the visible hair follicles and zaps them away one by one. The length of hair that extends beyond the surface of the skin will instantly burn up, and the follicle will be weakened within the skin. A hair has to be in a certain phase of its growth cycle for the laser to be effective, so it may take several zaps before a follicle stops producing hair. Additionally, all hairs do not grow at the same time. Hairs grow and shed in cycles. For these reasons, it is necessary to receive several rounds of laser hair removal to completely clear an area.

Everyone's skin reacts differently to the lasers, so technicians perform the first few treatments with the equipment on low settings. The laser's strength is gradually increased depending on how the skin is reacting and how quickly it heals after treatments. The immediate side effects of laser treatments are redness and soreness in the areas that have been treated. The skin will be covered in a calming cream, and the client may be seated in the waiting room with an ice pack for a few minutes before being permitted to leave. The skin will be very sensitive for a few days. Sun exposure must be avoided for the entire span of the treatments.

The little bits of hair that were still under the skin when they were zapped will come to the surface and fall out in the days following a treatment. They may be pulled out with the fingers, but they should not be plucked. A hair that does not come out with a gentle tug has not been affected by the laser and must be left in place. People undergoing laser treatments can shave, but they cannot wax or pluck. Waxing and tweezing increase the blood flow to the follicles and make them stronger, causing the hair to become thicker and darker.

It is normal for the skin to look sunburned after being treated. The technician should be informed if the skin feels too painful or begins to blister, since that means that the laser was turned up too high. Very rarely, laser treatments result in scarring and changes in skin coloration. Certain skin types and colors are more prone to this kind of damage, and the technician can make a proper judgment as to who is a suitable candidate for laser treatments.

Laser hair removal is most effective on people whose skin is very light and whose hair is dark. The lasers hone in on the contrast in color. People whose skin and hair are too close in color might experience an increase in hair growth. Laser treatments are classified as providing permanent hair reductions, not complete loss of hair, so it might be necessary to receive periodic treatments perpetually.
