10 Popular Ingredients for Homemade Conditioner for Frizzy Hair
By Jacqueline Samaroo
Plenty of the foods we use to nourish our bodies on the inside also work great on the outside! This is why recipes for homemade conditioner for frizzy hair usually contain yummy ingredients you probably already enjoy eating.
Here are 10 foods that tame frizz when used in DIY hair conditioners. Each one can also be used on its own.
For example, Coconut oil is a natural conditioner for frizzy hair. Simply rub a little coconut oil between your palms and apply it to your hair. Leave it in as long as you like – overnight is great.
Or, whip up a couple of eggs and apply them to your hair. Leave them in for a while then rinse with cool (NOT HOT) water – unless you like scrambled eggs in your hair!
Foods You Can Use as a Homemade Conditioner for Frizzy Hair
1. Coconut Oil
What it does: Coconut oil is very readily absorbed into the strands of hair. It can be used on its own as a leave-in conditioner for curly hair. Coconut oil will strengthen your hair and reduce dryness. It will also help to prevent split ends, leading to less breakage.
2. Olive Oil
What it does: Olive oil easily penetrates the hair shaft and has emollient effects. This means it smooths and softens your hair. It has moisturizing effects, too, to keep dryness at bay. It also strengthens your hair to make it more resistant to damage.

3. Egg
What it does: Egg yolk contains nutrients that have been shown to play a role in healthy hair growth. These include vitamins A, D, and E, as well as biotin and folate – two versions of vitamin B. Egg yolk moisturizes dry hair and also has proteins to help strengthen your hair.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar
What it does: ACV is an acid that can help to balance the pH of hair. Hair that is more alkaline tends to have a dull, brittle, and frizzy appearance. Well, acids and alkalis can kind of cancel each other out. Using ACV, and the acetic acid it contains, can help to restore your strands to a healthy pH level.
5. Avocado
What it does: Avocados are rich in hair-healthy nutrients. These include natural oils that can help to seal in moisture in your strands, as well as plenty of vitamins A, C, and E. Avocados also happen to be a very good source of biotin.
6. Milk
What it does: Hair is mostly made up of protein and becomes weaker when it protein content falls. Milk is protein-rich and can help to strengthen your hair. Plus, milk (whether it’s coconut milk, cow’s milk, or almond milk) can act as a moisturizer for dry hair.
7. Aloe Vera
What it does: Aloe vera has plenty of fatty acids and amino acids that are needed for your hair to grow healthy and strong. It is also a good source of vitamins A, B12, C, and E all of which play a role in the health of hair follicles. Aloe vera also helps to protect your hair from UV damage as a result of sun exposure.
8. Honey
What it does: Honey works wonders on dry hair. It acts as a humectant, drawing moisture in. It also bonds to water molecules inside the strands to keep hair moisturized. Added to that, honey is an emollient that helps to soften and smooth hair cuticles. Bye, bye, frizz!
9. Ripe Banana
What it does: Ripe bananas are a rich source of silica, which our bodies use in collagen production. Collagen is a protein that helps to give hair its structure and, hence, its strength. Ripe bananas also help to thicken hair and give a healthy shine. That’s why they are commonly used when making homemade conditioner for frizzy hair.
10. Yogurt
What it does: Yogurt is another protein-rich source with nutrients very similar to those in whole milk. Its proteins help to strengthen hair and the lactic acid in yogurt (as in milk) is traditionally thought to boost hair follicle growth while acting as a deep cleaning conditioner for your scalp.
Now, go ahead and nourish your hair inside and out with these delicious and healthful foods. Happy hair to you!
