This is especially true if you’re battling the elements. But how does it work? And what does it do specifically? Well…I’ll explain all you need to know below.
What is a Hot Oil Treatment?
A hot oil treatment involves applying a warmed, plant-based oil (i.e., coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, etc…) to both the scalp and strands for the purpose of enhancing the hair’s quality in some way.
Benefits of a hot treatment include:

Decreasing the number of split ends
Best Oils for Hot Oil Treatments
There are plenty of brands out there that offer treatments that come already mixed and ready to use. All you have to do is follow the instructions on the label. However, if you want a DIY hot oil treatment then it’s best to get plant-based oils. Some of the most popular are:
Coconut oil-This oil is ideal for things like reducing hair breakage, increasing moisture retention, strengthening strains, and promoting hair growth. It also protects strands from environmental elements.
Castor oil-One of the best oils for fighting scalp infections that cause itching, dandruff, irritation, and other disruptions which can affect scalp health. Additionally, it adds shine and may decrease signs of excessive hair loss.
Jojoba oil-Also one of the best home remedies for dandruff is jojoba oil. It’s often used to nourish and lubricate the scalp shielding it from dryness. The oil may even prevent hair loss and increase hair thickness.
Olive oil-Another great oil for hair loss is olive oil. It works to strengthen the hair follicles while repairing damage and promoting hair growth. It helps maintain manageability and conditions the hair boosting its overall health.
Sweet almond oil-Best for coarse, rough, or frizzy hair. This oil nourishes, defrizzes, and increases the softness of the strands. Moreover, sweet almond oil may reduce tangles and promote hair growth.
Argan oil-A nice hydrating oil that can lubricate the hair and scalp thus shielding them from daily wear and tear. Argan oil helps diminish breakage and split ends while enhancing overall scalp health. Further, it stimulates thicker, fuller hair growth.
Sunflower seed oil-All around best oil. Sunflower seed oil helps with a little of everything. Not only is it conditioning, but it also supports both scalp and hair health. Perfect for any problem including frizz, damage, thinning, etc…
How to Apply a Hot Oil Treatment
Hot oil treatments should always be done on clean hair otherwise the product will simply sit on the strands adding to build-up and blocking moisture. Therefore, make sure you wash your hair prior to applying the treatment. This will allow the oil to penetrate through the scalp and hair fibers.
Next, choose your preferred oil. You can blend oils together, use a stand-alone, or a store-brand product. Grab a microwavable bowl and pour anywhere from two to five tablespoons of each oil.
Warm the oil for ten to fifteen seconds and massage it into your scalp and down the length of your strands focusing on the ends. Apply upside-down if you’d like for more hair growth stimulation.
Note* The oil should NOT be hot. Touch the oil with your palm first to check.
Cover the hair in a plastic cap, then in a towel and wait for ten or even twenty minutes. Turban towels made with polyester and mesh are amazing at trapping heat which allows oil to penetrate better.
Rinse the strands, then continue with your conditioner and styling routine.

(Note* you should always do a patch test before applying any product to your skin. -Rub a few drops of unheated oil to the inside of your elbow and wait for twenty-four or forty-eight hours watching for any signs of redness, itchiness, or rash. If so, discontinue and consult your physician. Additionally, if you have any pre-existing skin conditions consult your medical care provider before use).
